It was a mess.

Two cars were speckled with ash and litter was left behind after someone burnt joss paper near a Haig Road carpark on April 5.

Stomper Nirma shared photos of unburnt joss paper on the grass around a used burner bin and ash peppered on a parked red Hyundai i30 and another car that was fortunately covered with a protective black tarp.

"Thank goodness the car did not catch fire," said the Stomper, referring to the Hyundai.

"But look at the aftermath. It was fully covered with ash. Look at the mess that was left behind.

"We were taught from kindergarten not to litter, but look at the mess. I cannot open the windows and door because the ash would fly into my home. It is polluting the air.

"Devotees, please take responsibility and pick up the litter around the bin."

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA) website, the burning of joss paper is a religious practice not regulated by law.

"To minimise disamenities arising from this practice, NEA has been working with religious federations to encourage devotees and members of the public to practice responsible burning," said NEA.

"We have been and will continue to educate residents to burn in smaller quantities to reduce smoke, not to scatter joss papers indiscriminately and to burn them in proper burners."
