9 men, aged between 28 to 82, arrested for illegal horse betting activities

Nine men, aged between 28 and 82, were arrested for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities during an enforcement operation on Saturday (Sep 19).

The enforcement operation was conducted by Woodlands Police Division along 20 Marsiling Lane.

The police said in a statement that cash amounting to more than $2200 and a hand phone were seized during the operation.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.

Under Section 5(3) of the Betting Act, any person acts as a bookmaker in any place shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

"The police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law," the police added.
