7 men, aged between 26 and 75, to be charged for separate molest cases

Seven men, aged between 26 and 75, will be charged in court on Monday (Oct 14) for their suspected involvement in seven separate cases of outrage of modesty.

Here are the seven cases, reported from October 2018 and July 2019:

  • On Oct 1, 2018, a 40-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 73-year-old man in a clinic along Tanjong Pagar Road.

  • On Jan 4, a 31-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 54-year-old man while in a taxi along Lorong Ah Soo.

  • On March 8, a 27-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 48-year-old man inside a residential unit along Serangoon Avenue 2.

  • On March 22, a 26-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 47-year-old man along Gangsa Road.

  • On June 4, a 21-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 75-year-old man at a shopping centre along Orchard Road.

  • On June 5, a 24-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 26-year-old man at Orchard MRT station.

  • On July 11, a 20-year-old woman reported that she was molested by a 31-year-old man at a monorail station at Sentosa.

"Outrage of modesty cases have been on an increasing trend and remain a key concern for the police," said the authorities in a statement on Sunday (Oct 13).

"The police will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter outrage of modesty cases."

Members of the public are advised to adopt the following preventive measures:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to any suspicious person(s);

  • Avoid walking through dimly-lit and secluded places or taking the lift with a stranger; and

  • Carry along with you a shrill alarm.

  • If you are molested, seek help immediately from those around you. Take note of the prominent features and attire of the suspect as well as the direction in which he or she went. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible to increase the chances of apprehending the suspect early. If it is safe to do so, the victim or other witnesses of the crime may assist to detain the suspect while waiting for the police to arrive.

Anyone convicted of outrage of modesty faces a jail term of up to two year and/or a fine and/or caning. If the victim is under 14 years old, the maximum jail term will be increased to five years.
