6 under investigation after enforcement operation against illegal betting activities at Sentosa Gateway

Five men and one woman, aged between 58 and 70, are being investigated for their suspected involvement in illegal betting activities.

Clementi Police Division conducted an enforcement operation at Sentosa Gateway on Feb 27.

During the operation, cash amounting to $300 and gambling paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits, the police said in a statement.

The suspects are being investigated for offences under the Betting Act.

Any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine of up to $5,000, or up to six months' jail, or both.

Any person who acts as a bookmaker, or loiters in any common betting-house or in any place the public has access to for the purpose of bookmaking or settling debts, or assists a person committing a betting act offence to evade arrest or detection, shall be liable on conviction to a fine of between $20,000 and $200,000, and shall also be punished with up to five years' jail.

The police added they will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal betting.

Those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
