33-year-old man arrested for suspected involvement in loansharking activities at Bukit Merah

A 33-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

In a statement, the Police said that the suspect was spotted leaving a debtor a note at a HDB unit at Block 129 Bukit Merah View.

Through the aid of CCTV footages, officers from Clementi Police Division managed to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Blk 121 Bukit Merah View.  

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in the vicinity of Clementi, Jurong East, Jurong West and Bukit Merah housing estate.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 8 July 2017 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition).

Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
