Drunk Chinese driver abandons vehicle and jumps into river to evade police at checkpoint

In a valiant attempt to avoid being caught drunk-driving, a man in Shanghai, China, fled from his car and jumped into a river.

The incident occurred in Shanghai's Jiading District on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Shanghaiist via Shanghai Daily, a man surnamed Tang had a bit to drink at lunch and then got in his car and started to drive.

Unfortunately for him, he soon ran into an unexpected sobriety checkpoint.

Rather than let traffic police catch him with alcohol on his breath, the man simply abandoned his car and hopped into the nearby river.

There, he splashed around for a bit before being helped out by police and then taken to jail. At the time, the temperature outside was around 8 degrees Celsius.
