A Bangladeshi air-conditioning technician placed his mobile phone inside a plastic pail at his office toilet to record videos of female colleagues using the loo, a court heard.

On Monday (March 27), Islam Md Ariful, 24, was jailed for 12 weeks after admitting to three charges of insulting the modesty of a woman last November.

Five other charges, including possessing four obscene films, were taken into consideration in sentencing.

The court heard that in August last year, six months into his employment, he formed the intention of recording videos of his female colleagues while they used the toilet at the office.

He placed the camera mobile phone inside a plastic pail at an angle facing the toilet seat.

He would check that the view was clear and that the phone was recording properly before leaving it on recording mode and exiting the toilet.

On Nov 17, he took a video clip of a 36-year-old manager using the toilet.

On Nov 20 and 23, he took a video on each occasion of a 26-year-old administration clerk in the toilet.

All three videos showed the respective victims seated on the toilet with their pants down. The accused kept the videos on his phone for his own use.

On Jan 19, his phone was found at the office toilet.

When the company director checked and found the three videos, he called the police. It was not mentioned in court documents if it was a common toilet.

In mitigation, Islam Ariful said he regretted what he did. He said he was angry with his boss' wife for scolding him with vulgarities.

But District Judge Adam Nakhoda told him his claim was not relevant to the charge.

The maximum penalty for insulting modesty is one year's jail and a fine.
