More than 2,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at Tuas checkpoint on Sunday (March 19).

ICA officers had directed a Malaysia-registered bus driven by a 24-year-old Malaysian man for further checks upon its arrival at Tuas at about 10pm.

The checks revealed duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in the modified air-con duct, roof luggage compartment and roof compartment of the bus.

A total of 2,041 cartons and 60 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized, worth $158,840 and $11,770 respectively in terms of potential duties to be paid.

The driver, goods and vehicle were handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations.
