Yamaha Contempo Music School apologises for cancelling flute lesson because of boy's autism

Yamaha Contempo Music School has apologised after a parent took to Facebook to complain that a flute instructor had cancelled his son's lesson because he was autistic.

Ivan Lim had described in a Facebook post how his 12-year-old son Alex was "shattered" after being turned away from his second flute lesson at the school located at Plaza Singapura on Aug 11.

According to Ivan, the instructor had told him that he had discussed teaching Alex with his wife who said that he "cannot teach" him.

When Stomp called the school yesterday (Aug 15), a staff member said that the school was investigating the incident.

A spokesman from Yamaha Contempo Music School told The Straits Times that the school had investigated the incident and sought Ivan's forgiveness.

"We sincerely apologise for all that we and the teacher did and all that Mr Lim and family went through," said the school. "No child, parent, or grandparent should be made to go through what happened."
