Malaysian groom punched by bride's relative for not having full RM15,000 dowry

A video circulating on Facebook shows a scuffle that broke out during a solemnisation ceremony on Mar 26 at a mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

According to The Straits Times, the altercation started after the 27-year-old groom-to-be could not come out with the RM15,000($5,100) needed for the bride's dowry and decided to leave the mosque.

He was then punched by one of the bride's relatives as he was taking his exit with his family.

The New Straits Times reported that the groom's family had originally asked the bride's family for the dowry to be set at RM7,500. The latter refused and asked for RM15,000.

The groom's family eventually agreed. RM10,000 was to be paid before the wedding and the remaining RM5,000 after the ceremony.

However, even though the RM10,000 had already been paid, it was claimed that the woman's family refused to proceed with the ceremony unless they received the remaining RM5,000

A video of the chaotic incident has gone viral after it was posted by Kosmo Online yesterday.

It has garnered more that 22,000 shares and close to one million views.
