Fire started by washing machine in Bukit Panjang flat

A fire started by a Samsung washing machine occured yesterday (Nov 9) at around 11am in the morning at Block 469 Segar Road, Bukit Panjang.

Just this week, 2.8 million Samsung washing machines were recalled in America due to risk of explosion.

All Singapore Stuff reported that a 42 year-old Singaporean housewife and her 16 year-old daughter were occupying the flat at the time.

They had been washing their laundry for about ten minutes before the machine burst into flames and exploded. Their neighbours smelled the smoke and tried to aid them, but the fire was too intense.

They called SCDF and the flames were extinguished.

An SCDF spokesperson told Stomp:

"SCDF was alerted at 11.50am, Block 469 Segar Road."

"SCDF sent one fire engine, two red rhinos, two fire bikes and one support vehicle."

"The fire involved a washing machine which was in a kitchen toilet."

"The fire was extinguished by SCDF with one compressed air foam backpack."

"There were no reported injuries and the cause of fire is under investigation."
