Rivervale Mall escalator suddenly stops, woman tumbles down 15 steps

A woman lost her balance and tumbled down 15 steps, when an escalator suddenly stopped at Rivervale Mall.

The incident happened on on Wednesday (Aug 2), at around 2.50pm, reports Lianhe Wanbao via Lianhe Zaobao.

A worker from a nearby shop, Mr Elson Hit, told reporters that he had heard a shout and rushed out to see what happened.

He said:

“I saw a woman in her fifties, who had fallen from the ground floor escalator.

“She seemed like she was in pain and keep shouting.”

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the woman was on the escalator going from the 1st storey to the 2nd storey, when it suddenly stopped.

The shoppers in front of her quickly held onto the handrail.

However, the woman could not do so in time, lost her balance and tumbled down the steps.

Mr Elson said that security personnel then arrived and lifted the woman onto a stretcher.

In response to media queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the incident at 2.50pm, and dispatched one ambulance to the scene.

The woman was conveyed conscious to Changi General Hospital (CGH) for treatment.
