Malaysian immigration officer caught on camera assaulting foreigner

An Immigration officer who hit a foreigner at the Department's office in Johor Baru was suspended and most likely will be dismissed, according to the Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.

The incident, that was caught on tape, happened at around 9am on May 30.

Mustafa said the officer's suspension was effective immediately after the footage of his act went viral online.

"His actions have damaged the Department's image and reputation. It is clearly against our code of ethics of public service.

"We will never compromise against anyone who commits such despicable action. Among further action that can be taken is termination of employment," said the director-general.

He added that any action taken will be based on Malaysia's Public Service Regulations.

In a video posted by Facebook user Ranendra Bhattacharyya, the Immigration officer is seen hitting the foreigner's head with an object in his hand, before pounding on the foreigner's hand which was on the scanner.
