35-year-old man arrested for burning mattress and damaging walls of Buangkok Crescent block

A 35-year-old man has been arrested for setting a mattress on fire on Sunday afternoon (Feb 26) at the void deck of Blk 978C Buangkok Crescent.

Residents told Shin Min Daily News that they did not notice anyone suspicious when the fire first started.

A second floor resident said that only his two daughters were at home when the fire started. When they looked out of the window, they noticed clouds of smoke billowing from the void deck, and immediately dialed for help.

The man said:

“After I received their call, I immediately rushed home. Luckily, the fire had been extinguished by then and nobody was hurt.”

Eight hours after the incident, police tracked down and arrested a man, who is believed to have started the fire. According to Shin Min Daily, the man is believed to stay around the area.

The Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre confirmed in a Facebook post that the fire had left the surrounding walls and pillars blackened, and had also damaged some lights. Only the springs of the mattress are visible in the photo in the Facebook post.

The police also confirmed with Shin Min Daily that they were carrying out investigations on the man for causing mischief by fire.
