Illusionists remember Sungei Road Thieves Market... with a touch of magic

The Thieves Market at Sungei Road holds a special place in many Singaporeans’ hearts.

Many from the older generation would be able to recall strolling down Singapore’s last free hawking zone, with boisterous roadside vendors selling their wares.

With the market’s last day of operation looming just ahead (July 10), many Singaporeans took to the internet to share their memories of the place.

Meta Illusions, a collective of magicians dedicated towards the creation of meaningful magic content, also released a video of their visit to Sungei Road.

In the video, the magicians showcased their magic tricks using objects from the market, to dazzle elderly hawkers and passers-by.

One of the magicians in Meta Illusions, Anderson said: "We would like the community of Singaporeans to remember this historical part of our country forever.

"Doing so allows people of the future generation to know about our roots, our past and enable them to immerse in our country’s colourful past.

"We feel magic can connect the younger viewers with history while allowing older folks to to reminisce those beautiful moments that will soon come to pass."
