An e-scooter caught fire at Marina Boulevard in front of the Red Dot Design Museum at about 5.15pm on Wednesday (Sep 26).

The incident triggered a series of small explosions and caused debris from the personal mobility device (PMD) to be flung several metres in all directions.

Stomper Choon Whee was passing by when he noticed something burning and emitting a lot of smoke.

"When I got nearer, a series of explosions happened and loud popping sounds were heard," he told Stomp.

"Pieces of debris started flying around."

The Stomper said that he saw a man running towards the burning e-scooter with a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

"The fire extinguisher seemed to have no effect and he was forced to retreat as the debris from the small continuous explosions started getting more aggressive and forced him back."

Choon Whee shared a video with Stomp of the e-scooter engulfed by flames.

"When I took the video, the worst part was over and most of the smoke had cleared but you can still hear intermittent popping and debris flying though not as much as it was initially," he said.

In response to a Stomp media query, a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said they were alerted to an incident involving a PMD along 11 Marina Boulevard at about 5.16pm.

The fire was extinguished by SCDF personnel using a dry powder extinguisher.

No injuries were reported.
