Brazilians Bibiano Fernandes and Adriano Moraes emerged victorious in their respective main event bouts at ONE Championship's blockbuster Fight Night 'Kings & Conquerors' that took place at Macau's Cotai Arena on Aug 5.
Defending ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano Fernandes, 37, squared off with challenger Andrew Leone, 27, from the USA, in a highly-anticipated championship clash.
The former wasted no time in seeing off his younger opponent. Fernandes drove a hard knee to Leone's mid-section before delivering the coup de grâce in the form of a rear-naked choke in the first of five scheduled rounds.
Fernandes set an unprecedented ONE Championship record of seven successful title defences with his latest victory. He is currently unbeaten in Asia's biggest MMA promotion.
Said the athlete who trains with AMC Pankration:
“I feel great, thank you Macau for having me. Thank you for my family in Canada and my family in Brazil who are watching me right now. I am here to stay. I welcome all challenges. I want to say thank you to Chatri [Sityodtong] and Matt Hume. I’m happy with ONE Championship. I want to continue fighting. Whoever I have to fight, I will accept. I am always ready!”
In the co-main event, fellow Brazilian Adriano Moraes, 29, defeated Kazakhstan's Kairat Akhmetov, 29, in a title unification match that was slated to crown ONE Championship's Flyweight World Champion.
Moraes, who previously held the interim flyweight title, controlled the majority of the action with his grappling while defending champion Akhmetov tried his best to fend off the Brazilian’s advances with wrestling manoeuvres .
Throughout the five scheduled rounds, Moraes had the advantage over his cage counterpart in terms of foot work and landing harder blows.
At the end of the tantalising championship bout, judges scored the fight in favour of Moraes, who earned the title of undisputed king of the division.
Said the new Flyweight World Champion who represents American Top Team/Constrictor Team:
“I’m not surprised (with the victory). Thank you very much, one more time, for the opportunity, ONE Championship. I want to thank my coach, my family and my friends. I’m very grateful.”
Another fight that stood out at the MMA extravaganza is top lightweight contender Shannon Wiratchai's bout with India’s Rajinder Singh Meena.
The former knocked out his opponent with a right knee to the head just 29 seconds into the first round of a scheduled three-round battle.
The upset of the night came from The Philippines' Jomary Torres. She overcame the odds to see off Thailand's Rika Ishige with a rear-naked choke in the second round of a scheduled three-round fight.
Torres' win marks the first blemish in the professional record of her opponent, who is regarded as a rising star in ONE Championship.
