5 men arrested for stealing marine gas oil worth $1,650 for profit

Five men were arrested by the Police Coast Guard (PCG) on Aug 1 for their suspected involvement in the illegal sale of three metric tonnes of marine gas oil valued at around $1,650.

The men were aged between 24 and 38.

The PCG had received a tip-off about the illegal sale of oil at the sea off of Penjuru in Jurong on Aug 1.

They then conducted investigations on a Singapore-registered tugboat that had five crew members on board.

The marine gas oil was found in a hidden compartment of the tugboat.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the men had misappropriated three metric tonnes of marine gas oil with the intention to sell them for monetary gain.

Three of the men will be charged in court on Aug 3 for criminal breach of trust.

If convicted, they can be punished with imprisonment of up to 15 years, and also fined.

Investigations against the other two men are ongoing.
