Xi'an doctors transplant new ear on patient's head after growing it on his arm

The wonders of modern medicine continue to evolve and impress, as seen in this case of a man who received a brand new ear after losing his in a road accident.

According to Shanghaiist, Guo Shuzhong, an expert in reconstructive surgery, led the successful procedure at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University.

As doctors were unable to grow an ear back on the Ji's head due to a scar, they decided to take some rib cartilage from him, use 3D printing technology to shape it, and then bury it in his right forearm.

The operation lasted seven hours and was complicated because finding the right place to implant the ear so that it could receive blood flow proved to be a huge challenge.

Ji was recently discharged, following two weeks of observation in the hospital.
