The family of the woman killed in a hit-and-run case in Burmah Road wants justice for her death.

Her youngest son, who wanted to be only known as Cheah, 23, said they had lost everything all of a sudden.

“The motorcyclist is really inhuman. He just rode off even without his helmet.

“We have a question for him.

“Why did he run after hitting our mother?” he asked at the wake in the Mount Erskine funeral parlour yesterday.

Cheah said doctors said his mother suffered 90% bleeding in the brain.

Foo Swee Wah, 58, (pic) was heading to the Pulau Tikus wet market to replenish stock for her Hainanese cuisine cafe when she was knocked down by a motorcyclist who ran the red light at a pedestrian crossing on Thursday morning.

“My mother would usually go marketing before we open for business. My eldest brother was at the shop when the incident happened around 10am.

“He was told of the incident by residents who witnessed it,” said Cheah.

He appealed to the media to give the family space to grieve during this trying period.

Also present at the wake were Cheah’s father and sister.

Family members collected Foo’s body from the Penang Hospital mortuary at noon yesterday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the motorcyclist was arrested at the Penang Hospital yesterday morning.

“He was warded after fracturing his cheek bone and chin bone in the incident.

“We took him to the northeast district police headquarters to record his statement before he was sent back to the hospital for treatment,” ACP Mior Faridalathrash said in a statement.

The suspect told a journalist at the police headquarters that he was rushing for work and did not notice the red light.

“I went straight to the hospital because I was injured.

“I did not stop because I was afraid I would be attacked by the public if I stopped,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving resulting in death, which carries a jail term of between two and 10 years, a fine of up to RM20,000 and suspension of the person’s driving licence.

The funeral will be held at 2pm on Monday.
